CityFindings

Boston.
In June 2015, BTF visited the first city on the Foundation’s Sponsor-A-City initiative, where 153 free brain scans were provided to the Boston community. Of the 153 scans, 93 (60.8%) were classified as Level 1, 53 (34.6%) were Level 2, and 7 (4.6%) were categorized as Level 3. Level 3 findings, which are abnormal findings of such clinical significance that they require expedited medical evaluation, were handled quickly.

Also discovered were abnormal findings on 53 of the scans – not requiring immediate medical attention but nonetheless deemed important. Examples from this class include small meningiomas and non-specific patchy white lesions in those younger than 60. For some, a more complete diagnostic workup was recommended.

Philadelphia.
In October 2015, the BTF Mobile MRI Unit visited Philadelphia, where 133 individuals participated in the research project. Of those scanned, 98 (73.7%) were categorized as Level 1, 31 (23.3%) were Level 2, and 3 (2.3%) were classified as Level 3. There was 1 with a Level 4 category.

New York City.
In November 2015, the Mobile MRI Unit visited New York. Of the 57 scanned, 48 (84.2%) were categorized as Level 1, 7 (12.3%) were Level 2, and 2 (3.5%) were at Level 3.

In May 2016, the Mobile MRI Unit visited Las Vegas. Of the 171 individuals scanned, 127 (74.3%) were classified as Level 1, 36 (21%) as Level 2, and 7 were at Level 3. One individual was determined to be at Level 4.

With regard to participation in the study, 478 (99.6%) were enrolled. Study participants range in age between 20 and 80 years. The majority are U.S. born and white. Participants are divided equally by gender. Each city visited has a unique profile. The Boston population was 89% white whereas enrollment in Philadelphia and New York were much more racially and ethnically diverse. The New York campaign also drew a younger population.
